Incredible Calabash Handmade Lamps by Calabarte

Within six years of time, the mysteriously sounding word “Calabarte” has become well known among handicraftsmen and artisans around the globe. Although the calabash – the name of the fruit Calabarte is derived from – originally comes from exotic countries, the artist who has taken the ancient craft of gourd-carving to the next level lives and creates in Poland. His handmade lamps continue to astound.

The artist is none other that Przemek Krawczyński, and we featured his unbelievably beautiful gourd lamps on Pondly in 2011. Now, after four years, we have decided to pay him a visit to see what has changed since then.

Krawczyński decided to devote himself to creating unique gourd handmade lamps in 2009, and since then, the international credits and accolades for his handmade work have been growing. Yet, despite huge interest in his masterpieces, he creates at most only 4 lamps per year.

The reason is simple – keeping the quality of craftsmanship and maintaining a high level of standards has remained crucial for him. This makes his lamps true, rare gems for connoisseurs.

Calabarte handmade lamps have been particularly acclaimed for their well-thought patterns, alluding to geometry, fractals, nature, or the works of M. C. Esher. Although ultimately complex and labor-consuming, each pattern is carved and drilled only once, ensuring that Calabarte customers have a piece of art that is one of a kind, and can never be re-created.

The process of making one lamp takes months of mental and manual sweat.

For years, Calabarte has been setting his sights on constant progress, and reaching new levels of precision. Although seemingly simpler in form, his latest table lamp, Rivia, was made using a new technique, in which the placement of every single hole in the perforation was carefully designed.

The results keep astounding. After turning Rivia on, thousands of interwoven, wavy patterns appear on the walls of a room, turning it into mesmerizing illustration of unspoken beauty. The precise design, enlarged on the walls by the light, prove to be absolutely flawless, unveiling Krawczyński’s background in mathematics, architecture and geometry.

The possibility of having such magic at home has already seduced mavens from the USA, Russia, Vietnam, Mexico, Malaysia, and many more countries around the word, showing that the desire of beauty is universal regardless of the culture.
